I transplanted myself into a small town and it's such a relief!

When I Moved to Texas…

When I moved to the small Texas town I currently live in, I kept telling people, “Well, when I moved to Texas from Austin, it was a big culture shock.” Then I would be like, “Wait a minute! Austin IS in Texas!” It just doesn’t feel like it. Houston is in Texas, and so is Dallas. So are all of the small towns. El Paso is really in Mexico, at least in spirit, and Austin is located in a particularly humid spot in Vermont, I think. Geography is pretty fluid, at least in my mind!

At any rate, now I really live in Texas! I came here and got a teaching job, and my, my, my are the teachers conservative here! This is the type of town where you don’t dare make a run to the grocery store without having your hair done, having full makeup and a nice outfit, because you just might run into your student’s parents, or even better, the superintendent. Actually, he lives next door to my parents, so no slumming around in sweats and no makeup when I go over there. Actually, now that I think about it, he might not recognize me if I did that, so perhaps it’s no big deal, really.

So here I am. I’m doing things that I never had the opportunity to do in the city, like fix up old houses and play with my brother’s chickens. You just never know what life will bring!
